Solo Guitar : Edmundo Vasquez
Sonata Mestizajes by Edmundo Vasquez
for solo guitar
Sonata Mestizajes by Edmundo Vasquez is a three-movement, virtuosic concert work inspired by certain musical forms cultivated in the 19th century and at the start of the 20th century. The Sonata received its premiere in Paris in 2008 by the dedicatee Roberto Aussel, who also recorded the work.
Chris Dumigan, in the October 2008 issue of Classical Guitar Magazine, considered it to be the most important piece of guitar writing in recent times. - "Edmundo Vasquez, Chilean composer who has lived in France since 1974, clearly wanted to bring into play, in this sonata, certain rhythmic elements introduced by African and melodic music from the Hispanic tradition, which are an essential part of the various expressions of dances and songs made of "congas" and "milongas", more particularly in the southern cone of America. Gonzalo Victoria, guitarist and young musicologist from Uruguay, was able to tame with sensitivity this work from which he was able to draw musical elements that are very dear and familiar to him."
