Four Guitars : Mendelssohn arranged by Gary Spolding

Wedding March by Mendelssohn arranged for four guitars by Gary Spolding

The Wedding March from the incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Felix Mendelssohn has transcended its original purpose and is now primarily associated with marriage ceremonies rather than the theatre. This arrangement for four guitars or guitar orchestra by Gary Spolding makes an unusual and entertaining item in any concert or even an actual wedding!

Lasting approximately 4 minutes, the arrangement will suit an ambitious and enthusiastic group of guitarists who have reached grade 2 to 4 standard. After the unison fanfare intro Guitar 1 carries the theme for the opening section before Guitars 2 and 3 take over for the fanfare-esque second section. Guitar 4 is the easiest but players will need some experience of reading ledger lines and a fairly well developed left-hand little finger.

If you work in education, this arrangement has these useful features…
- a D.S. al Fine and a repeat with first and second time bars.
- easy trills for Guitar 1 and 3.
- bars rest to count in Guitar 1 and 4.
- two octave E major arpeggios.
- a handful of F double-sharps in Guitars 2 and 3 (and one very easy one in Guitar 4).

This piece is one in a series of arrangements by Gary Spolding for beginner guitar ensembles. Each arrangement has at least one guitar part that is accessible to a player of ABRSM grade 2 standard and the other parts are never more difficult than grade 4. They can be performed as guitar quartets with one player to a part or by guitar orchestra with multiple players per part making them ideal for guitar societies or school concerts.

If you like the look of this arrangement then Pachelbel’s Canon may also be of interest.
