Four Guitars : Herold arranged by Gary Spolding
Clog Dance by Hérold arranged for four guitars by Gary Spolding
Clog Dance is the famous and iconic dance number from the comic ballet La Fille mal gardée by Ferdinand Hérold. This arrangement for four guitars or guitar orchestra by Gary Spolding makes use of guitar body percussion to imitate the sound of dancing in clogs.
Lasting approx. 3½ minutes, the arrangement will suit an ambitious and enthusiastic group of guitarists who have reached grade 2 to 4 standard. Guitar 2 has been specifically arranged to be approx. ABRSM Grade 2 standard without losing interest and keeping several of the main melodies. The other guitar parts are a little more difficult and Guitars 1 & 4 each have sections of thumb bass notes followed by a simple chord for the fingers style of accompaniment.
If you work in education, this arrangement has these useful features…
- a very strong 12/8 rhythm
- lots of descending m i p arpeggios
- percussion on the guitar body
This piece is one in a series of arrangements by Gary Spolding for beginner guitar ensembles. Each arrangement has at least one guitar part that is accessible to a player of ABRSM grade 2 standard and the other parts are never more difficult than grade 4. They can be performed as guitar quartets with one player to a part or by guitar orchestra with multiple players per part making them ideal for guitar societies or school concerts.
If you like the look of this arrangement then Largo from the New World Symphony may also be of interest.
